I recently published an essay on socialism which received the usual responses, most of which demonstrate the success of the established powers to spin socialism in a manner which best suits their desires. It is interesting how there are many people who justifiably reject the establishment, yet accept the establishment’s spin on the nature of socialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is one particular objection to socialism which will be discussed here. This is the idea that modern day socialism has never worked. Whether one likes the idea of socialism or not, it is best to understand why actually, it is, that socialism seems to fail, and no, \u201cit’s not because people want free stuff\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When socialists come into power, reactionary right-wing capitalist forces do not suddenly disappear or surrender to this initial defeat. They use their power, influence, and most importantly their capital, to undermine the newly established so-called socialists\u2019 regimes. They do this to protect profit opportunities, and to repel the threat against their ideological framework, which most participants likely, authentically believe-in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign capitalists\u2019 governments install trade barriers and impose financial sanctions which, importantly, often include limited or denial of access to a nation\u2019s banking system. When access is limited or denied to the U.S.’ banking system, which facilitates most foreign trade, this has a crippling effect on the economy of the newly installed \u201csocialist\u201d regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This happened in Russia during the early years of its revolution and throughout much of its existence, in Cuba continuously during the past 65 years, more recently in Venezuela, although Venezuela was still a mostly a privately run economy. Elsewhere, whether a country labeled itself socialist or not, socialist leadership, and even left leaning democratic leadership, have been removed through subversion, sabotage, and any other imaginable manner by reactionary capitalist forces. This has happened in Guatemala, Iran, Chile, Haiti, Bolivia, and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an ongoing battle between the material capitalist forces and socialist forces which the capitalist always wins due to its ability to concentrate capital which enables expensive subversive and military operations, expenses which cannot be matched by newly installed democratic and socialist forces, who must fund the promises made to the people during their rise to power, while restructuring the government for a more participatory form of democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nonetheless, the newly installed government will try to fund domestic needs, while fending off external threats, and dealing with the loss of private capital investment due to private capital’s fear of increased regulation, higher tax rates, and even nationalization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To fund all of this, the new government will likely resort to excessive money creation, which will deflate the currency resulting in inflationary pressures. Eventually the nation will run into balance-of-payment problems for which they will go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout, which will be granted on the condition of stringent budget and monetary targets, and other more appropriate capitalist behavior. In the end, the nation is socialist in name only\u2013capitalism wins. The anti-socialist forces then smugly state: \u201cSee, socialism never works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not that socialism cannot work, it is that it is defeated by stable and well-established, superior military, political, and economic forces. In reaction to the subversive capitalist forces, the socialist governments resort to authoritarian measures, at which point, the movement loses its socialist essence, i.e., at this point socialism fails for the second time, because socialism is democracy, it cannot be authoritarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term socialism has been placed in quotes within this piece of writing because of this. Socialism is democracy: it entails a more direct rule by the people. Socialism is an effort to push power downward to the people, to the workers, not upward towards a ruling elite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many nations have worn the title of socialism, notably nations of the former Soviet bloc, but, despite the highest ideals and an initial commitment to democratic processes, these nations resorted to authoritarian measures to counter the capitalist forces seeking to overthrow their newly installed regimes. At the moment socialist forces commit to authoritarian measures, however, the movement loses its socialist character; it becomes something else, but it is no longer socialism, and is more appropriately labeled state capitalism. It is state capitalism because capital still dominates labor, only now via the state, rather than the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authoritarianism is a response to internal and external reactionary actions which seek to overthrow socialist or socialist leaning governments. This is why a spiritual and ideological revolution must occur prior to the development of a socialist government. Government must be the natural outgrowth of the socialist sentiment. Short of this, there will always be sufficient capitalist forces which seek to undermine the socialist government which can only be overcome through authoritarian measures. The ideological, or spiritual battle, must be won first. Socialism is defeated by the forces of greed. Capitalism feeds the greed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most socialist believe in the rise to power through democratic means, hence the term democratic socialism. A small minority believe that power must be seized by force, and that after an initial seizure of power through violence, a \u201cnew man\u201d can be developed which believes in the socialist way, history has shown this to be false. The \u201cnew man\u201d must develop first, and then, through democratic means, will be enabled to establish a socialist government committed to economic fairness, environmental protection, and other communal priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revolution or transformation of the spirit requisite to a socialist society is, admittedly, difficult to achieve in a world groomed through a capitalist ideology built on the foundations of greed and materialism, but this is the task of the socialist. Short of this, socialism will always be defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
