The photography on this Page was taken over the course of 20 years, beginning around the year 2000. Most of the images were captured with a 12 pixel pocket camera with full manual overrides; a few images from earlier during this period were taken with less stealthy 35 mm film cameras. Not wanting to offend anyone in the communities in which I photographed,\u00a0 the process of capturing an image was fast and stealthy; correspondingly, there are no claims as to the artistic merit of the images.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But capturing the images was important. It is important to maintain in our consciousnesses the struggles imposed on communities through the free flow of capital; and to bear in mind the real human hardship suffered by those unable to escape the receding waves of capital investment. Lost property values, lost wages, the increased cost associated with an aged and oversized infrastructure, the burden of crime, all take their toll on the population.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hope is that these images will cause us to reflect on the destruction of lives and wealth that are the consequence of largely unregulated capital movements; and that as a result we seek solutions which mitigate the devastation imposed on these communities;  and also  develop policy which prevents this pattern in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
